Dosage: 6-18 ml by intravenous injection as directed by a veterinarian.

Stimulation of chondrocyte metabolism: results of increased production of proteoglycans and a healthy cartilage matrix. PPS stimulates synovial fibroblasts and produces an increased amount of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which leads to an increase in the production of usually viscous fluid in the joints. Improving fluid volume and consistency results in more effective joint lubrication and stabilization, which limits further damage to cartilage.

Anti-inflammatory activity: PPS has an inhibitory effect on all mediators of the arachidonic acid cascade. PPS also inhibits lysosomal catabolic enzymes histamine, hyaluronidase, cathepsin B and polymorphonuclear elastase. PPS has a specific inhibitory effect on mediators involved in the degradation of the components of the cartilage matrix, preserving cartilage and thereby preventing the release of highly inflammatory mediators, which relieves pain and inflammation.

Fibrinolysis and lipolysis: PPS is highly fibrinolytic, stimulates the release of plasminogen activator, and helps to dissolve blood clots and fibrin deposits in the synovial tissues and subchondral blood vessels. PPS also mobilizes lipids and cholesterol in the synovial and subchondral blood vessels, which are involved in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis in elderly animals. These effects combine to increase pre-fusion with the joint, which stimulates the healing and restoration of cartilage.

Pentosan Platinum is a very complex approach to the long-term treatment of osteoarthritis in horses. Unlike traditional treatments, the unique effects of Pentosan Platinum help to heal and restore a healthy joint in addition to a safe anti-inflammatory effect. Pentosan Platinum is NOT a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as phenylbutazone and cortisones (both of which have harmful effects on joints with prolonged use). Pentosan Platinum does not prevent the healing and restoration of cartilage joints. Instead of just masking the pain, PPS directly stimulates co-healing and repair.
